KALIDA ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER
MAY 2013
Dear Parents,
May has arrived and we prepare for another busy month at Kalida Elementary. As the weather improves, the activities increase. Field trips, programs and end of year testing mark the calendar as students anticipate the last day of school on May 23. Before you know it, the final bell will ring and summer vacation will be upon us. Enjoy the month and make sure homework gets finished before Mother Nature calls students outside to play. I want to commend everyone involved for another fantastic school year.
Karl Lammers, KES Principal
Class Lists
Class lists for the 2013-2014 school year are prepared and will be known to students on May 22 when we hold our annual Meet Your Teacher Day.
Oration Contest
Congratulations and good luck to our oration contest winners, Sydney Wurth and Kyla Fortman, as they participate in the county contest at OGHS on May 4.
DIBELS Assessments
Kindergarten through second grade students will be taking DIBELS assessments for the final time this year on May 7 or 8. This is a valuable tool to see the reading gains each student has made this year.
Kindergarten Program
The kindergarten will be performing their end of the year program on May 14 at 7:00 p.m. This year's production is called "Bugz".
Adult Volunteer Aides
Adult Volunteer Aides provide so much to our success at Kalida Elementary. Their extra set of helping hands, eyes and ears makes a huge difference to our teachers. The following group of ladies did a fantastic job helping out this year: Kay Unverferth, Sue Fuerst, Grace Haselman, Tammy Schroeder, Beth Kortokrax, Karen Fortman, Regina Fischnich, Kelli Ellerbrock, Kirstie Rafaniello, Gina Erhart, Mary J Averesch, Clara Fromhertz, Rita Iliff, Valita Lammers, Chellie Unverferth, Kelly von der Embse, Melissa Langhals, Jen Miller, Emily Wehri, Annette Gerding, Nancy Knapke, Mary Lou Merschman, Debbie Stanley and Pat Gray.
Enjoy Your Retirement, Mrs. Vennekotter and Mrs. Luebrecht!
Two great teachers are entering their final month of teaching at Kalida Elementary. With a combined 74 years in the classroom, these two have earned the privilege of retiring. From all of us here at school and from the entire community, we appreciate their many years of dedication to the students of Kalida.
Library Books
All books are due in the library by May 17.
Supply Lists
Supply Lists for the 2013-2014 school year will be sent home with grade cards the last day of school and posted on the Kalida Elementary web page all summer.
Unverferth Manufacturing Pen Pals
Our first graders will be having a picnic with their Unverferth Manufacturing Pen Pals on May 16. This writing connection has been a great experience for our young writers this school year.
Field Trips
May is a busy time for field trips. We like to tie educational adventures into a culminating road trip so our students can learn as they have fun. The following is a list of those trips.

- Grade 3 to the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo on May 15
- Grade 5 to Sauder's in Archbold on May 16

Safety City
The Kindergarten will visit the Putnam County Fairgrounds on May 8 to visit Safety City where they will learn many aspects of everyday safety issues.
Clean Up Kalida
The Fifth Grade will be participating in our annual Clean Up Kalida on the afternoon of May 8. They will spend an hour with an adult supervisor picking up litter around town to keep this beautiful town looking great!
Box Tops for Education
We recently received a check from General Mills for $1,640.40 for Box Tops for Education. Tammy Wurth and Mary Lou Hoffman have been very instrumental in the success of this program. Thank you to those ladies and thank you to everyone for sending box tops to school. Keep saving over the summer.
Labels for Education
Also, thank you to Tammy Wurth for her efforts with the Labels for Education program. We have been able to amass over 127,000 points for our staff to obtain items for their classrooms from the online catalog.
Cafeteria Charges
There will be no charging in the cafeteria after May 17. All accounts must be paid up by the last day of school.
